If and when you are in the position to hire someone new for your company, there are certain things you can do that will make the process less time-consuming, whilst receiving the most appropriate CVs and candidates.
Be absolutely clear about the position you want filled. State the Job Title clearly and list as many day-to-day activities as are necessary to give the viewer a clear idea of the predominant requirements for the post. It will sort out the viewers in to those who are happy fulfilling the roles you have listed from the ones who may have only been looking at the job title initially.
Location is of vital importance so be as specific as you can stating at least a post town in which you expect the candidate to work from. Also make it clear if you would require travel and if so, domestic or international, with their own car or a company car and for how much of the time.
A full and frank job description is a must. This will include the day-to-day requirements of the role, to whom they would be reporting, and so on. Be descriptive and succinct. Bullet points are absolutely fine here.
It is also good to provide specifications for the suitable candidate, for example the experience and skills you are looking for in an employee of the company and in this role.
You may wish to include personal, professional, academic or industry requirements and ideals here. Clearly state salary, whether that is a per hour, pro rata or annual sum and make it clear how many hours for example the candidate would have to work to meet salary requirements. What sector is the role in, for example accountancy or marketing? Make this as clear as possible.
It is also good to give an overview of any other benefits that the job may offer for example healthcare, car allowance and so on. You may want to promote your company at this stage, perhaps explaining why you are a top-rated employer with loyal staff and a small staff
turnover. There’s no sin in self-promotion and to attract the best, you have to provide the best and that doesn’t just mean salary-wise, but should encompass all additional benefits and reasons why someone would choose your company over any other.
Provide the date of posting and the deadline date for applications. Also ensure that you have provided the method by which individuals are to apply, for example via email including a cover letter and CV.
When you have posted your job on sites such as www.hugofox.com, hopefully the CV’s will start arriving with you. Read them all the way through and carefully, there may be something hidden that you wouldn’t pick up on first glance or more relevant skills on the second page.
Try to conduct interviews at least in the same week so you can compare candidates and assess their qualities effectively. Do not be afraid to interview two or three times to ensure you choose correctly.
